The Call for Contributions is now open!
Taking place in Leeds this summer, the ARLIS UK & Ireland 2026 conference invites proposals for presentations and workshops around the theme of challenging collections. How do the collections we work with challenge us, and how can we, in turn, challenge them?
You may consider some of the following sub-themes and questions, but we invite contributions inspired by all aspects of challenging collections and whatever that may mean to you, whether you’re a librarian, academic, archivist, artist, curator, designer, educator, writer, or anyone working in the creative and cultural industries.
Challenging traditional notions of collections and collecting: confronting our perceptions of collections in different contexts
- What makes a collection? How, why and by whom is material collected?
- What is the impact of format, be that traditional, digital or alternative?
- How does the space or location of a collection influence how it is approached and interpreted?
Provocative collections, ethical custodianship, and inclusive practices: materials with complex meanings or pasts and their relationship with audiences
- How do we handle objects tied to complex histories, conflict, or trauma? Should they be displayed, contextualised or repatriated?
- What does ethical collecting look like? How do we collect radical material in today’s world?
- How can institutions invite and ensure inclusion?
Behind the scenes: the challenge of spaces, staffing, funding, accessibility, engagement and/or promotion of collections
- How do institutional or personal resources impact collections and collecting?
- How might we navigate challenging financial environments and hurdles?
- Creative marketing can have a huge impact on collections. How are we engaging with promotional trends?
Documenting artistic processes and practices: reflecting on contemporary art methodologies and approaches
- How are artists using collections in research and bodies of work?
- How do we capture the creative journeys of artists working today? What is the place of sketchbooks, journals and drafts in collections?
- How do artists engage with the digital landscape or navigate artistic rights and authorship?

Abstracts of up to 200 words can be submitted for the following formats:
- Talks (20 mins)
- Short talks (10 mins)
- Workshops (up to 1 hour)
- Online workshops (1 hour)
- Poster presentation (A1 size, and professionally printed. Posters should not be mounted on a rigid backing. Expenses for the design, printing and transportation of the poster will be the responsibility of the presenter)
The ARLIS UK & Ireland 2026 Conference will be a hybrid event and talks will be streamed for online viewing. Workshops will take place either online or in-person only. Please clarify in the application form the proposed format of your contribution.

Equality & Diversity
We are seeking presenters who bring a variety of perspectives and backgrounds to our conference. We actively encourage submissions from people who experience barriers in society and the professional sector; this includes (but is by no means limited to) barriers around ethnicity, sexuality, gender identity, class, neurodiversity and disability, as well as those who have not attended or presented at a conference before.
We would also like to encourage contributions from those working in and around Leeds, Yorkshire, and the North of England.
For those presenters who require additional support to engage with the event, every possible effort will be made to support you and your experience of the conference.

Yn cael ei chynnal yn Leeds yr haf hwn, mae Cynhadledd ARLIS y DU ac Iwerddon 2026 yn gwahodd cynigion ar gyfer cyflwyniadau a gweithdai o dan y thema casgliadau heriol. Sut mae’r casgliadau rydym yn gweithio gyda hwy yn ein herio, a sut y gallwn ni, yn ein tro, eu herio hwy?
Gallwch ystyried rhai o’r is-themâu a’r cwestiynau canlynol, ond rydym yn croesawu cyfraniadau sy’n cael eu hysbrydoli gan bob agwedd o gasgliadau heriol a beth mae hynny yn ei olygu i chi, os yn lyfrgellydd, academydd, archifydd, artist, curadur, dylunydd, addysgwr, awdur, neu unrhyw un sy’n gweithio yn y diwydiannau creadigol a diwylliannol.

Dogfennu prosesau ac arferion artistig: myfyrio ar fethodolegau a dulliau celf gyfoes
- Sut mae artistiaid yn defnyddio casgliadau yn eu ymchwil ac o fewn cyrff o waith?
- Sut ydym yn cofnodi teithiau creadigol artistiaid sy’n gweithio heddiw? Beth yw pwrpas braslunlyfrau, dyddiaduron a drafftiau o fewn i gasgliadau?
- Sut mae artistiaid yn ymgysylltu â’r tirwedd ddigidol neu’n llywio hawliau ac awduraeth artistig?
Sut i wneud cais
Defnyddiwch y ffurflen gais i anfon eich manylion atom a chyflwyno eich cynnig.
Gellir cyflwyno crynodebau o hyd at 200 gair ar gyfer y fformatau canlynol:
- Sgyrsiau (20 munud)
- Sgyrsiau byr (10 munud)
- Gweithdai (hyd at 1 awr)
- Gweithdai ar-lein (1 awr)
- Cyflwyniad poster (maint A1, wedi’i argraffu’n broffesiynol. Ni ddylai posteri gael eu gosod ar gefn anhyblyg. Cyfrifoldeb y cyflwynydd yw costau dylunio, argraffu a chludo’r poster)
Bydd Cynhadledd ARLIS y DU ac Iwerddon 2026 yn ddigwyddiad hybrid a bydd sgyrsiau’n cael eu ffrydio i’w gwylio ar-lein. Cynhelir gweithdai naill ai ar-lein neu wyneb yn wyneb yn unig. Nodwch fformat eich cynnig cyfraniad yn y ffurflen gais.

Cydraddoldeb ac Amrywiaeth
Rydym yn chwilio am gyflwynwyr sy’n dod ag amrywiaeth o safbwyntiau a chefndiroedd i’n cynhadledd. Rydym yn annog cyflwyniadau gan bobl sy’n profi rhwystrau o fewn cymdeithas a’r sector proffesiynol; mae hyn yn cynnwys (ond heb fod yn gyfyngedig i) rwystrau sy’n ymwneud ag ethnigrwydd, rhywioldeb, hunaniaeth rhywedd, dosbarth, niwroamrywiaeth ac anabledd, yn ogystal â’r rhai nad ydynt wedi mynychu nac wedi cyflwyno mewn cynhadledd o’r blaen.
Hoffem hefyd annog gyfraniadau gan y rhai sy’n gweithio yn Leeds a’r cyffiniau, Swydd Efrog, a Gogledd Lloegr.
